Marriott Never Asked Me to Take Out the Trash

A handwritten Checkout Chore List card propped against a mug on a vacation rental kitchen counter — take out trash, strip beds, load dishwasher, sweep the floor, lock all doors — with two wheeled trash bins at the curb through the window

The year is 2006. You just rolled out of your hotel room, left the towels on the floor, tossed a few empty fountain sodas in the trash, and strolled down to the breakfast buffet. There were no instructions left behind, no notes from the owner, just peace with a side of free oatmeal. Life was good.

Fast forward to today. You’re standing in a stranger’s kitchen holding a laminated index card that says “Bins go to the curb Tuesday night — please pull them to the end of the driveway.”

This isn’t a diss at Airbnb. I think it’s such a cool concept, and it’s aligned with my values too — relying on other people instead of a corporation like Hilton or Marriott. But damn… Marriott never asked me to take out the trash.

So why are we doing MORE work now? Isn’t the future supposed to make things easier?

It’s not just you. A guest recently went viral for posting their checkout list. They paid a $165 cleaning fee, and the chore list was something my mother would write — start a load of towels with bleach, strip every bed, run the washing machine, take out the trash. The top comment was “I do zero chores if there’s a cleaning fee.”

Your host isn’t the villain here either. Trash day happens whether someone’s home or not, and it’s a trap in both directions. If the cans never make it out, a week of garbage sits in a hot garage until the next guest walks in. If they make it out and nobody brings them back, they sit on the street until the HOA writes a ticket. That leaves the host three options — drive over and do it themselves, pay someone, or hand the chore to the guests.

So we built a fourth one.

Swoop

We send a driver. Before the truck comes, we bring the cans to the curb. After it’s gone, we put them back exactly where they belong. Same day, every week, whether the house is packed, empty, or turning over between guests.

No trash duty for guests. No missed pickups, no tickets, and no laminated index cards for hosts.

Marriott never asked you to take out the trash. Now your Airbnb doesn’t have to either.
